New Delhi (March 12): Sudha Murthy, a well-known writer and Rajya Sabha MP, spoke about two big topics – teachers taking exams every three years and learning many languages, including Hindi, in South India.
1. Teachers Should Take Exams Every 3 Years!
Sudha Murthy said that teachers should not stop learning after getting a job. Right now, a teacher studies and gets a degree like B.Ed, M.A., or even Ph.D., but after that, there is no test till retirement. She said this is not right!
“Teachers should take a test every three years. This will help them learn new ways of teaching, new ideas, and improve their knowledge.” – Sudha Murthy
Why is this important?
- New things are always coming into education. If teachers don’t learn, students will suffer.
- A school can have the best classrooms, but if the teacher is not good, students won’t learn properly.
- Right now, teachers get training, but there is no test to check if they are improving.
She also said, teaching is an art. A good teacher should know.
- How to explain in a simple way
- When to be strict and when to be kind
- How to connect with students

2. Learning More Languages is Good, But No Forcing Hindi
Sudha Murthy was also asked about learning different languages under India’s education policy.
“I believe people should learn many languages. I myself know 7-8 languages! But learning should be a choice, not a rule.” – Sudha Murthy
What does this mean?
- Right now, the education policy says students should learn three languages, including Hindi.
- Many South Indian states don’t want Hindi to be forced on them.
- Sudha Murthy said learning more languages is always helpful, but nobody should be forced to learn Hindi.
3. Government is Spending Less on Education!
Another MP, Fauzia Khan, agreed with Sudha Murthy but pointed out a big problem – the government is not spending enough money on education.
- In 2015-16, the government spent 3.8% of the total budget on education.
- Now in 2025-26, it is only 2.5%!
- There is not enough money for early childhood education.
- 3 lakh schools in India are not properly managed!
If the government does not spend money on education, how will teachers be trained? How will students get a good education?
