From April 1, GPay & PhonePe May Stop Working for Some Users – Are You One of Them?

If you use Google Pay (GPay) or PhonePe for your everyday payments, here’s something you can’t afford to ignore! Starting April 1, 2025, new rules from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will kick in, and if you’re not prepared, you might suddenly find yourself unable to make UPI transactions.

What’s Changing & Why Should You Care?

NPCI’s new rules are designed to boost security and prevent fraud—which is great! But here’s the catch: some mobile numbers will no longer work for UPI transactions, and if yours is one of them, you could be in trouble.

Who Will Be Affected?

  • If your mobile number has changed, been deactivated, or is reassigned to someone else, it will be removed from UPI systems.
  • Banks have been instructed to delete old or inactive numbers to stop unauthorized payments.
  • UPI service providers like GPay and PhonePe must now update their systems weekly to ensure only valid numbers remain active.

What You Need to Do Right Now

Here’s the tricky part: your UPI-linked mobile number will only stay active if you approve the updates.

  • You must give consent through your UPI app (no SMS, no calls—just the app).
  • If you don’t update your number, you won’t be able to make UPI payments after April 1, 2025.
  • Banks & UPI apps will now report active numbers and transactions to NPCI every month.

Why Is This Happening?

This update is meant to make UPI safer and reduce the risk of fraud caused by outdated or misused numbers. While this is a positive step for security, the downside is that many users might lose access to their UPI apps overnight if they don’t take action in time.

Don’t Get Locked Out – Take Action Now!

Imagine waking up one day, trying to pay for your morning coffee, and suddenly your UPI app stops working—not fun, right? To avoid this mess, here’s what you should do right now:

  • Open Google Pay, PhonePe, or any other UPI app.
  • Check if your linked mobile number is up to date.
  • Give the necessary approvals within the app to keep using UPI hassle-free.

Time is ticking! Make sure your UPI access is secured before April 1, 2025.
