Ranya Rao is a film actress and the daughter-in-law of Karnataka’s senior police officer, DGP Ramachandra Rao. She has been arrested for smuggling 14.8 kg of gold from Dubai to Bangalore. The value of this gold is around ₹12 crore. She is now in 14-day judicial custody while the investigation continues.

In the last one year, Ranya traveled to Dubai 30 to 40 times, sometimes once every 15 days. This caught the attention of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials. They started keeping an eye on her, suspecting that she was involved in gold smuggling.

Investigations have revealed that this gold smuggling is part of a bigger illegal business that connects Malaysia, Bangalore, and Dubai. Here’s how it works:
- Some banned goods were smuggled from Malaysia to Bangalore and sold in the black market (illegal market).
- The money earned from selling these goods was converted into Bitcoin (a type of online money).
- This Bitcoin was then used to buy gold in Dubai, which was smuggled to Bangalore.
- Officials suspect that Ranya Rao played an important role in this entire process.
Are More Powerful People Involved?
Authorities believe that other influential people may also be involved in this racket. There are reports that the children of politicians, top police officers, and big businessmen could be connected to this smuggling network. This is being called a “high-tech operation” run by wealthy individuals.
How Much Money Did Ranya Make?
Ranya Rao made a huge profit from gold smuggling. The price of 1 kg of gold in Dubai is ₹81 lakh, but in Bangalore, it is ₹89 lakh. This means she made a profit of ₹1.20 crore per trip.
Legally, gold import is allowed in India, but one must pay 6% tax. Ranya did not pay this tax, making her actions illegal.

On Tuesday night, DRI officials raided Ranya Rao’s apartment in Lavelle Road, Bangalore. During the raid, they found ₹2.50 crore in unaccounted cash. This has made the case even more serious, and the ED is now more focused on tracking where this money came from.

Arrest and Jail Custody
On Monday night at 7 PM, Ranya Rao and her husband, Jitin Hukkeri, landed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). DRI officials arrested her as soon as she arrived. During the search, a large amount of smuggled gold was found hidden in her clothes.
The court has now ordered 14 days of judicial custody, and Ranya has been sent to Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. The investigation is still ongoing, and more shocking details may come out soon.
